With the savory taste of curry still in our mouths, and the memory of scenic greenery and forests profound in our minds, we have returned from Sri Lanka- the land of Paradise. We first arrived in Colombo, the capital city which is as much cosmopolitan as it is cultural. It touts high-rise buildings and old markets where East meets West. Down south is another popular tourist spot- Galle, the old Portugese fort town, where any view is worthy of a postcard photo. Famous for its scuba diving (where we were lucky to witness over 50 different kinds of fish, turtles and starfish) Hikkaduwa is also known for the small gift-shops where a tourist may bargain down any item for less than half the quoted price. We also spent a night in Habarana Lodge, a hotel situated in the middle of the jungle to which elephants and monkeys are welcome guests in the as much as humans. An eight-hour car ride up to Nuwara Eliya is well worth the ride, as the majestic rivers, lakes and jungles surround the road up. Renowned for its tea plantations, our hotel, the Tea Factory had many surprises in store for us, including an unexplainable prank by the hotel staff of taking our clothes from our suitcases whilst we were out for dinner, and stuffing them with pillows with the lights turned off! We concluded our trip with a climb up Sigiriya, a mountain palace lost in the clouds and regarded by many as the eighth wonder of the world.
Sri Lanka may not really be for those seeking a bustling nightlife, although the locals and websites will tell you the clubs are happening, the definition of "happening" is quite questionable...
