Hammurabi, ruler of Babylonia, was the greatest ruler in the first Babylonian dynasty. Hammurabi reigned from 1792 to 1750 B.C. Many believe that Babylonia began with Hammurabi. His empire covered land from the Persian Gulf through the Tigris and Euphrates River valleys to and westward to the Mediterranean Sea. During all his reign, he personally supervised the navigation, irrigation, agriculture, tax collection, and the construction of many temples and other buildings.
Even though he was the great military leader, Hammurabi is best known as the founder of the laws governing Babylonian life. Hammurabi ruled his people with acts of good will and fairness instead of violence and fear. The Hammurabi Code had 282 laws in which his people lived by.
