Germany as a country almost has the same cultural patterns as The United States of America, which is not just a hop, skip, or jump away! The American and German cultures are very similar with only a few differences. Both of theses countries are separated by miles of oceans and reside on two different continents, which are on the other side of the world from each other. I chose to compare and contrast the American culture to the German culture using Hofstede’s value dimensions as a guideline. Hofstede’s four value dimensions are: Individualism vs. Collectivism, Uncertainty Avoidance, Power Distance and Masculinity vs. Femininity. By using these four value dimensions as a guideline you can more easily compare and contrast different cultures to one another. The dominant American cultural patterns include: individualism, equality, materialism, science and technology, progress, work and leisure, and competition. America’s culture broke down into Hofstede’s value dimensions are a 1 in Individualism and Collectivism, 32 in Uncertainty Avoidance, 26 in Power Distance and a 13 in Masculinity and Femininity. When it comes to individualism America is number 1. America Hall 2 emphasizes the individual; the individual is the single most important unit in social settings. Being unique and different in the American society is always accepted and condoned. America puts stress on individual merit and achievements, these characteristics are valued and rewarded. Everyone in the American society is recognized by the individual's achievements, not as much recognized by group accomplishments. One can see this example by taking notice of the many celebrities, writers and painters which flourish in this country. Hostede’s second value dimension refers to Uncertainty Avoidance, in this category America scored 32. The United States is a nation with a low uncertainty avoidance this means that Americans are not afraid of change, change means progress. The American society is so fast pace that it has to accept change and is constantly changing to keep up with the times, no one feels threatened by this and it certainly is not unusual. Take technology for example it is constantly being developed then changed, and then it evolves from there. If you buy the most high-tech cellular phone on the market a month later they will have a newer model.
