EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Organisational Studies provides information regarding the framework of an Organisation, structure, culture, staff and makes a manager aware of the external forces that impact on an Organisation. Every Organisation has to have core operations that is supported by a good structure and maintained and influenced by a culture. The right type of structure, together with the supporting culture and vice versa puts an organisation at an advantage for sustainable competitive advantage.
St John has moved from the Fordism approach, which involved mass production, highly standardised products and did not consider the customer needs to more of a Post Fordism approach, which is more customer orientated, flexible and responsive to market changes. This approach involves being aware of one's environment and to be able to react proactively rather than reactively, to allude to Lewin's Theory that the manager needs to be proactive and must involve staff in the process of change in order to reduce resistance.
Quality should be measured on all aspects of an Organisation, the quality of a product (defect free), the quality of the internal environment (incl. staff) and the service to the customer. The approaches to quality measures should not be ad hoc but rather formalised procedures should be in place to ensure the delivery of a quality product and service to the customer. A Total Quality Management (TQM) approach needs to be implemented for efficiency and quality to be delivered holistically.
