Introduction
Delegation is a skill most effective managers must be able to do and do effectively. How well a manager delegates is crucial to the well being of their employees and can determine whether or not that manager will succeed or fail. Delegation is defined as "the assignment of authority and responsibility to a subordinate at a lower level." (Bateman & Snell, 2004) There can be a right way and a wrong way of delegation tasks to their subordinates. A manager assigns tasks to their employees according to their area of responsibility and expertise. I will discuss how the managers within the organization I work for delegates and assigns tasks to their lower subordinates and how delegation can be used effectively with the four functions of management; which are planning, organizing, leading, and controlling.
Planning and organizing
Planning and organizing go hand and hand. In order to plan something, it must also be organized. Before a manger can delegate a task down to a subordinate, they must first plan out the task at hand and determine the steps that need to be taken before delivering it. The manager must then organize the plan and determine things such as when the task will be due and how often the employee must report back to them during the course of the task...
