Rebel with a Cause
1984 by George Orwell, tells of Winston, a man living in a controlled society where most people have been brainwashed. In Oceania, the rules and morals are unethical because the citizens aren't able to make their own decisions. The city of Oceania is tightly controlled, has a strict class structure, and prohibits individuality which causes Winston to rebel.
Oceania controls all its citizens and Winston does not feel free in this city, so he decides to rebel. In the city, everyone is watched by telescreens so no one feels safe. While walking home, Winston passes a telescreen and Orwell writes, "Winston kept his back turned to the telescreen. It was safe: though, as he well knew, even a back can be revealing" (7). As Winston passes the telescreen, he knows that turning his back might show that he is hiding something. Winston is insecure around the telescreens and analyses every step he takes. The telescreens control the citizens so they will do no wrong...
