Satire in the 18th Century

The eighteenth century was given many titles in which the people had labeled it such as the Age of Reason, the Age of Enlightenment, and the Age of Satire. Writers such as Alexander Pope and Jonathan Swift had written such works as "The Rape of The Lock" and "A Modest Proposal". Within each work many can see a literary trend of satire in which both Swift and Pope had used to mock the social weaknesses of the eighteenth century. During the eighteenth century many English men and women sought refuge from the religious and political persecution they had seen and faced in England; in fact many of them turned to North America to seek religious and political freedom. Many saw monetary gain within the agricultural resources located in Northern America. England had gone through much tumult by the year 1700 including a devastating plague. The English middle class had greatly grown many British men and women created new literary works. This reflects how many of the individuals living within England at this time were starting to question themselves and the world around them more frequently. Many people began to ask how and why.
