David Maloufs' novel, Fly Away Peter, is a novella that explores the very life of young Australian boy Jim Saddler and his journey from innocence to experience, through his journey from Australia to the raging battlefield of Europe. Many themes are conveyed by means of simple and accessible language and development of key ideas. The statement, from page 132, of 'that is what life meant, a unique presence and it was essential in every creature', accessibly sums up the major theme of that life is meant to be unique which is clearly created as being what life means for others throughout the novel through the readers contact with; Imogen Harcourt, nature, the war and Jim Saddler.
