The epiphany of the story, that moment of personal revelation, is one of negativity, a staring up into the darkness "with anger and anguish." (I hope I quoted that correctly. I'm working from memory, not having a copy of the story handy.) One of my favorite moments in a story filled with favorite moments is that tiny incident where Joyce reveals the girl, Mangan's sister, as playing with the golden bangle on her wrist as she talks. If we take it that Mangan's sister is a postulant, a nun-in-the-making, then we see how her mind is not yet separated from materialism.
