Leonardo's Study of Anatomy
During his training as an artist, Leonardo da Vinci developed an interest in human anatomy for the improvement of his paintings. He discovered that he would have a better perspective on correct anatomical alignment by developing a systematical approach to his work. This would enable him to capture his subjects more accurately, therefore improving the quality of his work.
Leonardo began his studies of anatomy by reading descriptions of the human body. He studied medieval works such as Galen and Albert Mondoino de'Luzzi, as well as ancient Greek text like Plato and Aristotle. Leonardo began compare his studies to Ptolemy's study of Geology and theory of light refraction, as well as his scientific method. Da vinci then molded a systematic study of human anatomy and physiology.
During this time period, anatomical information was relayed verbally by surgeons or by text to other physicians and students. Leonardo wanted to enhance his learning by visually displaying the anatomy, along with detailed descriptions to more easily convey of the physiology of the human body. (Veltman)
