Extended Response - Iago’s Deception- Deception is a notorious theme in Shakespeare’s Othello. It can be seen surrounding several of the characters. Iago is very talented in his use of deception. He slyly manipulates the beliefs and expectations of others with cunning lies, trickery and dishonesty. This can be seen with respect to a variety of characters, the most prominent ones being, Othello, Casio and Rodrigo. Iago has deceived Othello in several ways. He has painstakingly manipulated every word, moment, and action, to his advantage. Iago’s aim was to ignite a spark of jealousy in Othello’s trusting heart, he was successful. Iago introduced the idea of infidelity slowly, allowing plenty time for Othello to become accustomed to the idea. He did this by drawing attention to small insignificant details, which in reality meant nothing. An example of this is when Iago mutters, “ha! I like not that”, when questioned about his statement, he replied by saying, “nothing, my lord: or if - I know not what”.
