Thus began the race to create the biggest guns to break down the common heavily dug in trenches or forts These heavy artillery pieces consisted of any type of gun that typically had a diameter of 155mm (a little over 6”) and greater. This was Germany’s specialty, as they possessed the biggest guns in the war. Most of their biggest guns were actually naval guns that were kept on land and transported by railroads to support their tremendous weight.
