"In every culture, marriage is a tool, "says Stephanie Coontz, a professor of history at Washington's Evergreen State College and author of "The Way We Never Were: American Families and the Nostalgia Trap." I believed that marriage was a traditional event that took place in people's lives, however I came to realize that there is no such thing as a traditional marriage because marriage has been changing and evolving for many years. For example, same sex couples are now allowed to get married. However, although marriage is no longer traditional, is the modification of last names after getting married non-traditional also? I have been given the assignment of collecting people's views and ideas of the "last name" issue through a survey that I conducted. By doing so, I gained understanding about what people would do regarding the name modification issue if/when they do/did get married. As a result, I soon came to realize that different people have different views, beliefs, and ideas about the issue.
The survey that I conducted was based on many different things, which included age, gender, marital status, etc. The ages ranged from under 19 to over 60. They consisted of both males and females who were single, divorced, married, or engaged...
