A common theme in the novel, White Noise, is that the characters treat television, radio, and the general media's opinions and information, as if they were the words of God told to them personally. The characters in this book, in most cases, have no real opinions without the assistance of the media to inform them. The media feeds its viewers information in a specific fashion in order to influence them. This novel addresses how commercials are representative of consumerism and how the media intertwines advertisements with tragic breaking news coverage. Although, the two informational entities are as different as night and day, the media proceeds to convince its viewers that these are equally important. The media has become our society's opinion and mental reality due to its highly objective audience. The media has become infallible and any person who doesn't agree with "society" and its conventions is considered an outcast to all who believe in its omnipotence. This kind of "all or nothing" attitude is what is responsible for the outlooks of the three characters that we will discuss about the media dabbler, the media worshiper, and the media junkie.
Jack, "the media dabbler", is the main character, he is amusing because he is such a well educated man, yet he has unreasonable fears about death. He may fear death because of the terror he felt during the toxic cloud event...
