It is common for many young adults my age to have already formed strict cultural and religious beliefs. Although it might be comforting to have my beliefs set in stone, I'm very thankful I don't. Should I already hold definite opinions about how this world came to be, they would most likely not be my opinions but rather my parents'. I have been given the opportunity to observe both extremes, creationism and evolutionism, and shape my own ideas.
Though there are a wide variety of types of creationism and evolutionism, both have their base ideas and general beliefs. Creationism, as defined by Webster's Fourth Edition American Dictionary, is "the literal belief in the account of creation given in the Book of Genesis; creationism denies the theory of evolution of species." Creationism is based on the concept that all things originated by an act of God, with the single exception of God himself, who is said to have existed eternally. Earth was created by an act of God around 6,000 years ago, in accord with the Ussher-Lightfoot Calendar. Though the Bible offers two different versions of how God created the world, the story of creation in Genesis 1:1-2:3 is the story most often associated with creationism.
