a republican

One of these was in 1819, MO applied for statehood. Bordered by free states, MO had a large number of slaves. So the question was will it be a free state or not? Another problem was it this time there was an even number of slave states and free states, so which state MO becomes has the advantage politically. This was a topic for debate until 1820 when Maine will petition for statehood. This leads to the MO compromise. MO is admitted to the Union as a slave state and Maine is a free state to help keep the states free not equal. Then there is the deciding of Southern boundaries for MO. Latitude 36/30 as the permanent line dividing free states from slave states. MO was the exception because it is also its southern boundary. There are 2 other events that take place during Monroe's presidency; 1 in 1819 the US will acquire the territory of Florida and 2) the Monroe doctrine. The Monroe doctrine comes about in a speech he made to congress in December 1823. In this speech he says that “the American continent by the free and independent condition which they have assumed and maintained are henceforth not to be considered as subjects for future collation by any Europe power, and any attempt to interfere in the western hemisphere will be regarded as the manifestation of an unfriendly position toward the US.” The reason this speech was made was because the countries of Chili, Columbia, Peru, and Mexico had all gained their independence from Spain and the fear was that the Spanish or other European powers would try to take control of these countries. We also wanted our own influences in these countries. (If someone was going to take advantage politically our neighbors or gain land we would rather it be us.) Election of 1824. Only 1 party republicans and there is not an incumbent (Pres. for 2nd term), there was alot of competition, 4 major candidates. Votes Electoral John Quincy Adams 109,000 84 (Sec of State & son of John Adams) Henry Clay 47,000 37 (Speaker of the House) William H. Crawford 46,000 41 (Sec of Treasury) Andrew Jackson 153,000 99 Jackson had the most votes but not the majority so the House of Rep. decided the only the top 3 candidates were eligible. So clay was out of the election (electoral votes) and he will give his support to John Q. Adams. This leads to the House electing John Q. Adams; he wins by 1 vote in the house, 3 days after this he appoints Henry Clay as the new Sec. of State. This doesn’t look good and causes many people, including Andrew Jackson, to believe that the presidency was stolen from him. Due to these events Jackson started running for the next election at that point. The first Industrial Revolution in the U.S. (First IR world wide in 1750, England) In 1791 a man named Samuel Slater will put into operation the 1st American machinery for spinning cotton, located in Pawtucket, RI.. By 1815 there are 170 spinning mills, like Slaters in New England alone. Not a large benefit came from Slaters invention until 1793 when Eli Whitney invented the “cotton gin”. With the cotton gin the cotton fiber could produce more efficiently, which solved the supply problems for the factories and turned cotton into a major cash crop not only for U.S. but also for the whole world. In the S the influx of cotton agriculturally will spread across the states already growing it and in Miss. And AL. Where it hadn’t been planted before. In the N the textile factories were starting up all over; NY, NJ, and Penn. The N is better for the factories, land not good for growing crops, there is a large population, has exposed to shipping lains, and the rivers are shallow and fast moving to run the mills. Eli Whitney in 1798 also made a machine that was capable of reproducing same parts repeatedly. It was useful in the firearms industry. By 1850 this principal of interchangeable parts was widely adopted and as time went on and improved the results were mass productions and assembly line methods. In 1800, congress had only issued 306patterns and 1860 had issued 28000. 1846-sewing machine-Aliurs Howe (later perfected by Isaac Singer) 1844-telegraph-Samuel Morse (also Morse code) In the industrial revolution you had to have workers. In the N there were large populous. These workers were called wage slaves (low laborers). They worked in terrible conditions, long hours and little pay. There was also child labor on a large scale. (Not many laws to govern) They had worse positions than older. Had the jobs that others didn’t want, and abusive treatment and the conditions were hard and it was a do it or else method.
