The Catcher in the Rye
The novel The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger takes place in New York in the
year 1948. This story is about a young man named Holden Caulfield who is going back
and forth from school to school. He seems to be a very unique person, with a lot of
opinions he develops on his own. Through his relationships with peers, adults, and teachers
Holden develops strong opinions about "phoniness" and ways to avoid it or combat it.
Holden seems to have strong opinions with his peers and phoniness. When
Holden is talking to Stradlater and Ackley he mentions how Stradlater is somewhat of a
phony. "He was at least a pretty friendly guy, Stradlater. It was partly a phony kind of
friendly, but at least he always said hello to Ackley and all " (26)...
