DISCUSSION
“…imagination is not the faculty of creating images, but rather of transforming and distorting images…”
Bachelard’s “imageless imagination”
Bachelard, in his book The Poetics of Space, claims that imagination is not the mere ability to form images of the real world, as it is in the traditional view, rather it is the ability to form images that no one ever thought about.
“imagination is not the faculty of forming images of realist it is rather the faculty of forming images which go beyond reality, which sings reality(a super human faculty) to imagine is to overcome the human desire.”(1)
Yet he also asserts that faculty of imagination cannot only be producing ‘new’ images yet it should ‘deforms what we perceive’:
“Studies of the imagination, like many inquiries into psychological problems, are confused by the deceptive light of etymology. We always think of the imagination as the faculty that forms images. ... If there is no change … there is no imagination ….
