A Separate Peace
Books are often written to reflect on a time period and to show what life is like though several main characters and settings. A Separate Peace, by John Knowles, was written to reflect on the time period of World War II. Through the main characters of Finny and Gene, John Knowles is able to show the life of young boys during the tough time period around WWII, and what their lives were like because of the war. The war caused competition all around the world between countries, athletes, and the characters at Devon Academy. John Knowles used young boys at the private school in New England to reflect on the war occurring in Europe, and the competition brewing all around the world.
The story of A Separate Peace takes place during World War II, and the characters in the story have battles within themselves along side the war. Gene and Finny are the main characters, and had a brother like relationship that helped give an edge to the story. The two were always at each other's side or at each other's throats. Finny was a star athlete that everyone looked up to because of his abilities. Gene, on the other hand, was a straight A student who people wanted to be because he was so gifted at school...
