Language is a powerful tool that shapes every aspect of human life. George Orwell in his essay “Politics and the English Language” recognizes the power of language and criticizes the overuse of “decadent” speech and writing during the tumultuous years following World War II. He argues that the abstract and metaphorical language often used by politicians is not authentic and has a deteriorating and excluding effect on thought. ...
George Orwell and Amy Tan use entirely different contexts to convey their thoughts on the dangers of the misuses and misperceptions of language. Orwell wrote his essay in the midst of political turmoil in Europe and uses the propaganda abundant during this time to depict the danger of the contagious use of language with no real meaning. Tan however, is a first generation Asian-American who uses her mother’s immigrant status to depict the difficulties experienced by people whose first language is not English.
Both Tan and Orwell emphasize the importance of simplicity in language.
