Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet is considered a tragic love story, but was it really a love story. Is there any way to know if Romeo was really in love with Juliet and Juliet with Romeo or were they just infatuated with each other? This can be quite challenging to figure out. There are some similarities between infatuation and true love, but also some distinct differences. These similarities and differences need to be looked at to decide if it is in fact infatuation or true love.
The similarities are "preoccupation with the loved one, strong attraction, an aching heart, butterflies in the stomach, restless sleep, etc" ("The Nature of Attraction and Love"). As these similarities are looked at in regards to Romeo and Juliet, it can be seen as to why it would be considered a tragic love. Infatuation and true love similarities do make it difficult to decide between the two. If a closer look is taken then maybe it will be easier to decide between the two.
