The government over time has changed how much freedom that the media has during wars and conflicts. Allowing or not allowing reporters close to the "action" can change the way the public looks at the conflict or war. The technology has changed allowing reporting to live, showing the public the battle as it happens. There has always been a bias in all news reporting. Embedding allows the media to be "in the action," giving new perspective to the pubic. Embedding reporters in Military units has not happened in the last few conflicts; has the embedding helped to boost support from the public?
If you look back, all the way to the Civil War there has always been some method of censorship of the news. In the Civil War North and South newspapers battled the government and the military, leaders think that the reporters may give the enemy information that could jeopardize the mission. This is main drive for censorship in all wars. The "Press release" and "press pass" stemmed from this war in an effort to prevent any information leaks...
