High Performance Teams
In many workplaces today teamwork is encouraged and emphasized. As employees ability to succeed depends on our ability to work with a number of people, many of whom differ from us by race, gender, culture, background, education, thinking styles, etc. Leveraging the full contribution, creativity, innovation, and potential of all team members is fundamental to the teams' ability to become high producing and to be fully functioning. (Schermerhorn, 2003)
One essential to a high performance team is cross-training. (Schermerhorn, 2003) Employees cross-trained to understand the entire departments processes should gain more concern about the end result and what it takes to get there. This also creates opportunities to eliminate mistakes and come up with ideas for process improvements.
Unfortunately the diversity that makes teams so successful can also stand in the way of their success. It isn't easy for people to overcome their differences, whatever they may be, and work together effectively. Differences can also make many employees uncomfortable. It's the responsibility of management to move employees from fearing differences in others to valuing them...
