Film essay Sociology 101-2 A CRY IN THE DARK What is labeling? Why do we label? How does someone in a large society remove label, after it is given to him? Let’s look at some of these questions. It seems that in the society that we live in there are all kinds of labels that one person or a group of people give to others. Since the beginning of time I’d be willing to bet there has always been labeling. We can look back during the time of witches and warlocks to see that this occurred. In the case in the movie, the implications of the mother being labeled as “a murderer” proved to be a fatal blow to the defense during her trial. Her and her husband were also labeled as “too religious” to the point of wanting their child to be sacrificed in the wilderness while they were on vacation.
