Ancient Greek culture was a complex society based on the worship of many deities and gods. The ancient Greeks believed that their lives were completely dependent on nature and that their gods controlled all aspects of nature and so, indirectly, every aspect of their lives. In mythology, the gods passed severe punishment to mortals who they believed expressed such undesirable behaviour as pride, excess ambition and an overly ostentatious lifestyle. The worship of deities is not uncommon in any culture. Societies need an idol to worship and identify with. People need something to believe in and to explain how things came into being. This is the purpose of myths and legends. They create a history of sorts for the time before recorded events. They help to explain how things came to be and why things are the way they are.
