Jessica Lynch may be a Miss Congeniality back in her hometown of Palestine, West Virginia, but on the battlefield she could take out several Iraqi soldiers and live through gunshot and stab wounds. Lynch became a war hero after she was rescued from an Iraqi hospital. Injured and tortured, Lynch spent 10 days in the hands of Iraqi soldiers after her squad was ambushed. Her bravery, courage, and the will to survive lit up headlines everywhere. However, what actually happened during the ordeal and what the audience wants to hear are two different things; and the media knows very well how to manipulate the audience into believing what they want to hear. The media portrayed Jessica Lynch as a hero when the more appropriate description is survivor. I will use sources from Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, and Newsweek to breakdown piece by piece how and why the Americans bought the heroism of Jessica Lynch.
