ACL Tears in Football Players

The knee is one of the most important functioning unit of the body to allow for movement especially in athletes in football, basketball and soccer. ... The ACL is approximately 3 cm long, and has its origin on the lateral femoral condyle within the intercondylar notch and inserts into the tibial plateau medial to the anterior horn of the lateral meniscus. In present day sports, there are several contraindications that favor anterior cruciate ligament tears. Recently there has been a rise in number of women suffering from ACL tears who play basketball because of the constant changing of directions by rebounding then pivoting and sometimes quick movements that involve moving right to left quickly. More predominantly than female ACL tears is the constant tearing of ACL’s in men’s professional football. Every year there are several member of each NFL team who suffer from ACL tears and go through the process of reconstruction and rehabilitation as if it were a normal part of the “job”. In preseason camp, a majority of the players work out in a prehabilitative form to prevent from being sidelined if injury were to occur. ... Everyone in the NFL is susceptible to ACL injuries and tears and injuries occur because sometimes the athlete is over trained or possibly overdeveloped in musculature in the legs which favor ACL tears. ... The player who suffers from a torn ACL feels a “pop” and usually states that the knee feels like its coming apart. When the ACL ligament is stretched too far and tears the blood vessels inside the ligament rupture and blood fills the knee joint causing the knee to swell. While the ACL injury itself is usually not terribly painful, the swelling that results from blood inside the knee prevents most people from returning to the game. ... Anterior cruciate ligament tears are common as “false start” penalties in the NFL, especially today with the average lineman weighing well over three-hundred pounds and with the quickness of running backs and receivers who change directions of running at instant seconds to avoid being tackled . ... There are over 100 players listed with a variety of injured body parts, but the most common football injury youll see involves the knee. When the NFL season rolls around, injured players become crucial as teams battle for a spot in the SuperBowl.
