Blade Runner and Brave New World Comparative Study Of Texts The similarities and differences in the texts Blade Runner and Brave New World clearly demonstrate that all texts are a product of the context in which they were produced. That is, the present day context of the composer and influences from past texts create each new text into being. The composer of the new text should also anticipate that their text would similarly influence future composers. Blade Runner was composed in a time of rapid technological progress and multinational power; the 1980’s were a time where things previously thought impossible were being achieved every day. Comparatively Brave New World was written in 1931, at which time there was much political unrest and post-war technology had boomed. Clearly Ridley Scott and Aldous Huxley were preoccupied with advances in technology, political power and has this affected society within their own contexts. Therefore, whilst their contexts may be separated by over fifty years of history, their authorial intentions can be likened. Stylistically, both Brave New World and Blade Runner belong to the science fiction genre and therefore use similar techniques with which to comment on their own contexts. Both texts conceal their political intentions behind a futuristic and fictional setting. For instance, Aldous Huxley composes a setting in the year AF632 where Jesus is no longer the centre of the western world’s view of history, Henry Ford and his manufacturing process has bought a new god – technology. Ridley Scott interestingly, portrays through his setting of 2019 the Tyrell Corporation who hold a god-like status – all knowing and all-powerful. God has once again been replaced by an alien culture. Both composers also portray their pessimistic views of the future by creating a dystopic vision of what the future may bring if nothing is done to change the way their societies are heading. The bleak reality of Huxley’s setting which from the outset, impresses the composer with, “a squat grey building of only 34 storeys” only to undercut this with the price of such advancements; a sterile environment lacking any sense of humanity.
