Analyze the impact of the transformation of the Middle East from a universal empire organized through religion (millet system) to a state system organized along nationalist lines. Be sure to address the following questions: How are the two systems different? What caused the change? And how does this transformation continue to reverberate in the Arab Middle East?
The Ottoman Empire ruled in the Middle East for over three hundred years. In order to maintain the stability and the authority in such a region filled with different nations and ethnicities, The Ottomans created a political organization that they called the millet system. Towards the end of the nineteenth century, the nationalist movements in the Western countries and the economic and political weakness of the Empire eventually resulted with a wish for independence among the nations who lived under the Ottoman reign. After the World War I, The Ottoman Empire was defeated and collapsed ultimately. Britain and France shared the places in the Middle East as they brought the mandate system to the region.
