In eastern Europe absolutism played a big part in the development of the region. As serfdom was revived, monarchs in Russia, Prussia, and Austria became more powerful. Because of war, foreign invasion, and internal struggle, absolutism in these countries emerged. The dominant artistic style of the age of absolutism was baroque-a dramatic and emotional style. The baroque style is characterized by an emphasis of unity among the arts. In the art, painting, sculpting, and architecture were brought together in new spatial relationships both real and illusionary, often with spectacular visual effects. Trends in baroque art tend to engage the viewer, both physically and emotionally. The monarchs' use of architecture in the baroque style was used to enhance their power.
