Both of these pieces were, to say the least, interesting to listen to. Both selections were brief and very expressive, albeit evoking odd moods. In their own respective ways, the pieces were extremely powerful and unique.
Lutoslawski's Venetian Games, First Movement is a very moody, dark, and suspenseful piece. Lutoslawski utilizes carefully placed percussion, discordant horns, and frantically-struck discordant piano keys in order to achieve this eerie ambiance. Violins are also prominent, although never dominate the sonic landscape. Venetian Games is a very unstructured piece, as many aspects of the parts are unexpected and unpredictable for the listener.
Ligeti's Disorder is an appropriately named work, as it features extremely frenetic and chaotic piano playing. Disorder features the piano exclusively. This piece does not feature a discernible or memorable melody, and the music is discordant and dissonant, lacking structure and order...
