1 This essay is mainly an analysis between the short story “Two Kinds” written by author Amy Tan, and the movie “The Joy Luck Club”, based on the same name Amy Tan’s book. Through this paper we’ll try to understand the personality of Waverly Jong, one of the characters in a subplot of the movie, and find a link with the short story; this comparison involves thinking about the ambient in which they develop, and the most important of these elements for the short story and the movie are the cultural, social and time context. Time is crucial for the stories, because it was the change factor for the characters in the movie and in the story to move from their origin place to a complete different and unknown place to live and how their life affected and influenced their daughters life in the future. 2 All of the women which were members of The Joy Luck Club were from China, and moved to the United States of America, its interesting to see why of this, why so suddenly. In the 1930s and 1940s, women were not very important for Chinese society, they were physically and psychologically abused. Their marriages were not good because a lot of them were arranged, which lead to the woman to be abused by their husband or mother in law. In addition, China was in the middle of a revolution in order to liberalize from Japan, which cause also many social problems. These situations affected how mothers lived their life and how it influenced afterwards their daughters. In the case of “The Joy Luck Club”, life was hard in China so the woman members of the club decided to abandon China in order to get better opportunities and life quality in the USA. 3 In “Two Kinds” we can see a very sad situation that gives an important moral message to the reader. This story talks about a family constituted by a Chinese Couple and their daughter, named Jing-Mei (June). The main situation that develops in the story is the bad relation between mother and daughter; this bad relation is a consequence of Jing-mei’s mother desire of Jing-Mei development and to be successful in life, this desire is a result of the mother frustration, because her life as a women in China wasn’t very good, and then at the United States dealing with new culture wasn’t also an easy thing to do.
