Advocacy and Global Outreach The activities of the International Reading Association are designed to further goals of professional development, advocacy, partnerships, research, and global literacy development. Nowhere do these goals come together more than in our programs of advocacy and outreach, designed to further the right to literacy for all. The Association's resources and the strengths and commitment of its members are brought to bear in three broad areas: Advocating for and supporting the training and professional development of teachers Addressing global literacy needs Influencing and responding to U.S. public policy Our positions and policies as they relate to these areas and to current pressing issues in literacy teaching and learning are outlined in a comprehensive series of position statements. Association members make a difference in the lives of learners worldwide. They participate in IRA's advocacy and outreach programs as an expression of service to their professions and their commitment to improving the quality of literacy worldwide.
