Aborigine Australian’s made many gains in the period between 1972 and the early 1990’s. They gained land rights, policies were set up such as the Anti- Discrimination Act of 1975, Australian white people recognized the stolen generation and began to say ‘sorry’ for what they had done wrong. People of Australia began also saw the amount of deaths in custody among Aborigines as a big problem. Aborigines also made social gains including better health, housing and education.
When Cook came to Australia he saw no evidence of land ownership. ... In the late 1970’s e Queensland Government began to deny some of the Meriam Islanders the use of their lands. ... It also overturned the legal fiction that Australia had been terra nullius. ... Other gains in the parliament included the first Aboriginal to become a State Governor in 1976.
