Structuralism- Wilhelm Wundt established the first psychology lab. This laboratory was geared to trying to describe the conscious mind. If you could break down the conscience mind into small parts, these small parts could describe the mind and its experiences such as thoughts, sensations, and imagery. Structuralism can also be described as the study of the elements of awareness.2 Structuralism had its roots in some earlier work in psychology. Scientists had found triumph in studying sensory perception by manipulating stimuli and having subjects report back their experience. Wundt adopted this general approach for his new found science.
Functionalism In the late 1800's a new approach to psychology was developed in the United States. Functionalism was not concerned with the structure of the mind, but with what the mind does and why.
