Overcoming Our Obstacles in Life
"Bartleby, the Scrivener" has several themes to its story that relate to every human being either from a personal perspective or through the eyes of someone who has experienced it. In today's society we constantly worry about how the world sees us. We forever doubt our positions and capabilities in life. As the lawyer questions himself in the story, we are forced to look at our own lives and debate whether we made the proper choices. In order to do this we are going to analyze the themes that are most prevalent in the story. Self-doubt, excess hardships or baggage and self-pity, depending on how we handle them can either make our character stronger or weaken our spirits.
We all at one time or another have doubted a decision that we have made. Like the lawyer showed us in the story he forever disputed himself. This was shown when clarification was needed from Turkey and Nippers' on deciding what actions should be taken. This reflects how we always need some type of approval from society to judge our self worth...
