Executive Summary
Established in 1976 in Taiwan, Acer group is the Asia’s largest PC (personal computer) manufacturer. Acer offers wide range of value added products such as notebooks, plasma screens, projectors, wireless communication products, mobile phones, computer peripheral, and other components. ... The company’s grand strategy has been innovation, and to pursue the strategy the company had established main R&D (research and development) lab in Taipei in 1970. ... 5) the company opened an R&D lab in Silicon Valley in 1980. Being located in Taiwan the company has been facing political problems due to business hostile relations with China, on the other hand it was difficult to ignore the huge market potential and technical resources of China. This paper analyzes the dilemma of Acer group to open an R&D lab in China or to develop expertise in labs in Taiwan and US.
Situation
Acer had grown with the principle to provide value added and affordable PCs, which was also responsible for lowering down worldwide cost of computers. ... But any move to open an R&D lab in China could be risky in case relations between China and Taiwan got worse.
