Although, there are many benefits to living along the river, there are also just as many if not more disadvantages. The main disadvantage that will be discussed is the issue of floods, which will include the damages involved, what can cause a flood, and what preventative actions must be taken to assure as much minimal damage as possible. Even though the damages and disadvantages of dealing with floods are quite detrimental, we will see that buying and building on properties along the riverfront is still increasing.
Every year, flooding causes over ninety percent of the disaster-related property damage in America and accounts for over seventy-five percent of all residential disaster declarations. In fact, over the last decade, property damage related to flooding has averaged over three and a half billion dollars. In 1996, damages were estimated at over six billion dollars.
With those who live along the river might have the scenic value but they also have increased financial setbacks- especially for those who live on a floodplain. Not only should these people who live in these areas know exactly where their house is on the flood plain, but should also know such things as the elevation of the ground. From knowing where a house is on the flood plain, one can tell whether their house is on boundaries for either a one hundred year flood, compared to a five hundred year flood.
