The Disney movie "The Little Mermaid" was based on the story written by Hans Christian Anderson. Since both works were created at different times and using different means to reach he media, they were different in many ways. It is still common for stories to be written first and have a director express the story through their interpretation. This seems to be difficult because stories let the reader use his or her imagination to set scenes, colors, and characters. Movies on the other hand, have everything predefined and severely limit the imagination.
In Anderson's story, the little mermaid makes a deal with the sea witch to become human. The sea witch tells the little mermaid that she must cut her tongue off and that once a human, she can never return as a mermaid. As if that were not enough the little princess will turn into sea foam the morning after the prince has married someone else. With her tongue and life at stake the little mermaid agrees. In the movie, the sea witch just steals the little mermaid's voice using witchcraft and then takes her away after he marries...
