Heart Disease
Heart and circulatory disease is the biggest killer in the UK, in 2001 cardiovascular disease (heart disease) was responsible for 40% of all deaths and killing 245,000 people¹. In this current age of new technology governments and charities are investing millions of pounds into research which is decreasing the mortality rate but at the same time the number of people getting heart disease is increasing. ... 5 million people have coronary artery disease¹.
Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) is the most common heart disease and causes over 120,000 deaths in the UK per year, this accounts for approximately 20 % of all deaths¹. CAD is the development of atherosclerosis within the coronary artery that provides the heart with blood, oxygen and nutrients, anything that restricts this flow can seriously damage the heart and even result in death. ... This causes a cardial infarction (heart attack) and therefore results in death. ... When the heart isn’t receiving enough oxygen it sends out this painful warning signal known as angina. ... Unsaturated fats lead to a higher level of high-density lipoproteins (HDL cholesterol) which removes cholesterol from the circulation5 and appears to protect against coronary heart disease. ... Smoking has been linked to increase the development of atherosclerosis and smokers have been found to have a lower ratio of HDL to LDL and so the risk of getting coronary heart disease is greater. ... This increases the blood flow in the coronary artery and so a sufficient amount of oxygen can reach the myocardial muscle cells in the heart. ...
Even though CAD is the most common heart disease it isn’t the only one, there are many types of heart disease. Another type is one involving valves within the heart, this is known as Valvular Heart Disease (VHD). The valves in the heart control the flow of blood and are vital in the cardiac cycle; they allow and prevent blood to flow by opening and closing.
