By the 1700s the first few colonies contained close to 300,000 people, but by 1750 it contained well over 1 million. In 1790 the first census was taken in the U.S. and it showed 3,900,000 people living in the colonies. Much of the high population was caused by high birth rates, but about half of the increase came from people immigrating into the U.S. Manny people moved to colonial America either because there were forced to come here and live or because they wanted more freedom and a new start. Some of the people that immigrated to colonial America did not come here on their own free will but were forced to come here by either the government or slave traders. Slaves were shipped from different parts of the world into the new land to work and begin and to help build the colonies. The slaves would be captured and forced to board slave ships and then be shipped to America were most of them would stay.
