Important Role of Our Humanities

The humanities are more than just a book, a course, or a title given to a particular set of
studies. The humanities preserve cultural memory: they record how things came to be as
they are. On October 25 of 2001 our President gave notice to the Humanities. Amidst the focus
on national security and the war, President George W. Bush took time out to issue a
proclamation supporting National Arts & Humanities Month. By doing so, the president joined
his White House predecessors in recognizing and honoring the importance of the arts and
humanities. As the president points out, the arts and humanities have been essential to helping
heal our nation's wounds in the aftermath of September 11. But this is just one of millions of the
ways humanities have affected lives. Through the Humanities class I have taken, I am easily
able to explain four different major benefits of the course to myself and the affects it has had on
others.
