The film renderings of Shakespeare plays can at times been seen to be dumbed down somewhat to how the original plays were. This can been seen in many of the teen adoptions of his plays, especially when his original idea is taken and transformed into a different screenplay. Though many of the films around today stay closely to Shakespeare original words, it is just the interpretation of theses words that is different to the original work. In making a moving directors will normally produce what is popular at the time, and aim for this market. By looking at two more recent films based on Shakespeare's work, these movies being, 10 Thing I Hate About You and Much Ado About Nothing, it can be seen that Shakespeare is dumbed down sometimes to reach a particular audience.
The film, 10 things I hate about you can be seen as another update of Shakespeare for the MTV generation. Where the film excels is in the fact that it's actually funny, albeit in a teen movie kind of way. 10 Things I Hate About You attempts to dress up Shakespeare in hip garb. Taking its inspiration from The Taming of the Shrew, 10 Things I Hate about You, also throws in some slightly more contemporary ingredients, 1980s New Wave hits, 1990s sexual frankness, etc. and whips them into a concoction set for the American teen market...
