The design and development of databases and the associated related database management systems are the key components behind the successful use of intellectual property that businesses often rely upon to make critical decisions and strategies. A well designed database will greatly aide the decision making process by providing dynamic information based on structured queries and reports. Subsequently, businesses can make informed decisions based on tailored information relative to a specific request or defined set of needs, such as how much product was sold, how much product is in storage, or any other demographic information needed for the business case.
The approaches supporting this endeavor must adequately research, define and implement that particular information needed to make the database a useful and dynamic tool instead of a useless and cumbersome repository of unimportant data. Conversely, the following methodology would be used to glean company information and design and implement a Microsoft Access database that would support the business case:
Examine existing platforms for content and intent. Although existing platforms are most likely inadequate (hence the rationale for building a new database), they may contain key information on how the business operates or how information is processed or used throughout the enterprise.
Review company records, forms, and documentation. A thorough search and acquisition of company documentation, reports, forms, etc., will enable the database designer to roadmap the process(es) and build the database.
