In Ayn Rand's Anthem, a collectivist society prevents its people from discovering self-worth and free thinking. In this society all things must be done solely to benefit the group. A desire for independence and knowledge is a great transgression. People are prevented from discovering themselves as individuals. Long hours of labor and rigorous schedules transform the members of society into workers, rather than freethinking individuals. Fear and mind-control cause the people of this society to become completely unaware of their ego. One can view himself as nothing more than a member of society who works for the better of all men. Prometheus is unlike the others. He has a strong desire to rise above others and break free of the mandate that virtually imprisons him.
Prometheus comes to understand that his transgressions were only sins in the eyes of his society...
