Macro Analysis The Shawshank Redemption
The Shawshank Redemption, starring Tim Robins and Morgan Freeman, can be seen as a buddy movie. I believe it is much more than this. The opening seven-minute section of the film shows how lonely and separate the two main characters. The opening is a montage of a flashback showing what Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins) did the night his wife left him and Andy's trial for the murder of his wife and her lover.
The opening scene's music, and the quality of the recording, tells us the film is set in the 1940's. The car Andy is sitting in and the way he and the other characters are dressed also tell us the time it is set. The colour throughout is sepia and browns and greys to show its old fashioned feel. It appears washed out to show its age and that everything is old and used.
The opening establishing shot, lasting 39 seconds shows a country house at night from the outside then pans to a car. We see Andy through the open window...
