The three main points of the article "Modalities of self-managing teams" are as follows: environment for the product produced must be variable, so that demand varies and decisions must be made locally; the best organization type for local decision making will be a structure where workers use the same type of equipment to perform variable tasks to create different products; and employee's intelligence and personality traits influence whether self-managed teams have the desired results. The author has created a model to determine if self-managing teams will be useful to the organization called the MMCW model. The acronym is for the modal verbs, "must", "may", "can" and "will".
The "must" aspect of the model concerns the environment, the variability of customer demands. The "may" is whether the organization facilitates self-managed teams, more specifically whether the team will be able to act autonomously. The "can" aspect of the model deals with the ability of workers to perform in this type of environment. This is pertaining to the intelligence and personality traits of workers mentioned earlier. The "will" is whether workers will be motivated to perform in this model.
How can upper management get lower management to embrace self-managed teams? This is sure to be a problem when first introducing these teams to the organization...
