Stem cell research can be very valuable for thousands of people suffering from diseases such as diabetes, Alzheimer's disease or Parkinson's disease. It can help save many lives and cure crippling birth defects. Tens of thousands of people a year are on the waiting list for a donor organ that can potentially save their lives. If stem cell research was legalized and funded, there would be no waiting list as stem cells have the ability to form into any needed cell. The stem cells are harvested from aborted fetal tissue, which would be discarded anyway. Why not help to save an existing life?
If stem cell research were allowed to continue the results could be disastrous. What would stop doctors from harvesting organs from comatose patients and adults on life support if they are allowed to continue destroying one life to save another? All embryos are human life, regardless of which stage of development, and are defenseless against mistreatment. If embryos are considered to be less than human, because they are considered to not "feel", how would it be any different from extracting cells from a clinically insane person or an elderly person who is going to die anyway?..
