Poetry has been written for a very long time and has always had a big field of application and meaning for people.
Poetry is a way of expressing feelings or thoughts. To be able to write poetry can be a relief for those who doesn't dare or can show what they feel in any other way. In "Dead Poet's Society", one of the boys fell in love with a girl but didn't have any luck in showing her how he felt. He wrote a poem about how wonderful he thought she was and then red it to her which made her understand his feelings even if she didn't approve of them.
Poems can also give the writer or the reader as well more self-confidence. There was another boy in the film who was under a lot of pressure from his family and from the school to be a straight A student as his brother had been before him. He is very shy and has a lot of problems when he has to read and talk in front of others and also with showing his feelings. When he gets homework and has to write a poem that he shall read out loud in class he tries to write one but he can't. He feels that his feelings and thoughts might not be worth anything and therefor he comes unprepared to class...
