Impressionism is a very interesting form of art, in many different
ways. When Impressionism first became known, artists struggled to find
markets for their work, and many lived "hand-to-mouth". Impressionism
was frowned upon at first, and changed when artists quarreled with each
other and painted with a more Academic style that they hoped would
appeal buyers. In the late 1800s, the public changed their views toward
"the Impressionists" style of painting and it turned into a new class that
wanted images of the world they lived in.
The term impressionism was brought about when Louis Leroy,
an outraged critic, looked at Claude Monet's Impression: Sunrise and
snickered "Impression!". The name Impressionism was accepted as a term
in the art world within a year. Although the name was accepted, the art
itself was not. The critics and the public both said that Impressionists could
not draw and that their colors were tasteless. (About Impressionism)
Impressionists chose to paint outdoors, and to show the hastily
changing conditions of the light and of the atmosphere...
